While he is a skilled pilot and he graduated near the top of his class at the Academy, he is not nearly as good as he thinks he is. Having never really faced a situation that his own natural skills could not see him through, Erich can be at times insufferable. | Personal History | Erich comes from a family with a strong historical tradition of Naval Service dating back to the Kaiserliche Marine (Imperial Navy) of the German Empire. However, his family had never served in Starfleet, and had instead for years been part of the Federation Naval Patrol. His uncle rose to the rank of Captain in command of the cutter USS Blücher, and pressured his nephew into honoring the family tradition. However, Erich had wanted to join Starfleet from a young age, a decision that his father supported. So at the age of 17, Erich applied to and was accepted by Starfleet Academy. During his time at the academy, Erich was a successful student and an uncanny pilot. Near the completion of his first year of study he was asked to join Nova Squadron, the Academy's flight demonstration team. Upon joining in May of that year, he became the first freshman cadet to join the team since Joshua Albert in 2368. Graduating in May of 2386 third in his class, Erich was given his pick of assignments. Having been interested in the Luna class throughout his time at the academy, Erich chose to be assigned to the USS Iapetus who was then in transit to an assignment in the Delta Quadrant. |
