Departing

Posted on Thu Feb 16th, 2012 @ 11:04pm by Captain Vorn Krace

Mission: Heart of an Explorer
Location: USS Iapetus - Bridge
Timeline: MD16 0858hrs

Krace sat in his ready room, tossing an apple he had replicated but not eaten absent-mindedly from one hand to another, staring up at the chronometer on the wall. It was nearly time for them to depart the station for their new mission, but he was determined not to jump the gun. So he sat there, tossing the forgotten apple, and waiting, letting the anticipation well up inside of him until it almost tingled his skin.

He knew that it would take them almost a month by Starfleet's estimates to get where they were going. But that didn't dampen his spirit; they were finally going on a proper mission of exploration. A mission that he had wanted for years since assuming command of the Luna class starship, and he couldn't wait to get started.

As the seconds ticked down, and the chronometer finally changed to read 0900, he left his apple on his desk and stood, immediately moving towards the ready room door. "All hands to duty stations," he said, giving the command to the computer that he knew would recognise and broadcast on every deck of the ship.

As the doors parted for him, the captain made a bee-line for the chair nestled at its centre, where his XO currently sat.

"Thank you, Number One," the captain said, as Acle rose to allow the captain to take the newly-vacated seat and turn his attention towards the front of the bridge. "Mister Cook, release the mooring connections, and take us out, one-quarter impulse." He knew that thrusters-only was the rule until out of dock, even a dry dock, but he wanted to get going as quickly as possible.

"Aye, Captain," the enlisted man responded, keying in a series of commands on his console. As the various supply cables were jettisoned from the hull, and the station's low-power tractor beams were disabled, the viewscreen began to shift, depicting the visible sides of the external drydock receding as the ship gained speed.

"Set a course for the unknown, Petty Officer," the captain said with a grin. Krace waited a little moment for the anticipation to build before giving the final order. "Engage," he said, feeling the old order carrying more drama in his own mind than it likely carried in the minds of the rest of the crew on the bridge.
