William (NPC) returned to standing at his station at Ops and going over power distribution logs for the ship as the impromptu staff meeting came to a close. He expected that Tactical might want to use him to assist in the sensor sweep the Captain asked for in the meeting, as the Ops station had the most direct access to the long-range sensor suites located in the three sub-decks raised above the saucer section of the ship, and so he made sure not to make himself too busy, and thus able to help when asked for it.

It was then that he watched Commander Garhart speaking to his assistant chief, a lieutenant, who then proceeded to approach William at Ops. He hadn't gotten to know the man yet, but Will did know that the lieutenant's name was Maxwell Reynolds.

"Lieutenant?" Max (NPC) said as he approached the Ops station. "Commander Garhart has tasked me with the sensor sweep that the Captain ordered. I hoped I could enlist your help."

Will smiled as his prediction came true."Certainly, Sir. Bringing up the long-range sensor net now."

"OK, we need to program in the parameters that we're searching for," Max began, musing it over in his head. "We'll be searching for metreon particles, certainly, but there has to by other by-products of a test of a weapon using metreon energy."

William nodded. "In the briefing, the Captain suggested that the medical department might be able to help us in that area," he replied.

"Yes... good idea." Max stood and looked around the bridge, apparently hoping that a member of said department would convieniently appear. It was at that point that Lieutenant LaToon appeared out of the briefing room, relaying a few commands from the Captain. "Lieutenant?" Max called to her. "Could you lend us some of your expertise for a moment?"

Annylyn looked over at the two Lieutenants, and moved over, "Yes, how may I help you?"

"We're performing the sensor sweep the Captain ordered in the briefing, only we don't know exactly what we're looking for." Will explained. "Do you know of anything specifically we should be looking for as a result of a detonation of a metreon weapon? Something that may lead us to a testing ground?"

Annalyn looked thoughtful, "you know, I am really not sure, a higher level of radiation at the very least, but what else I am not sure. The Captain and I may feel it if there are any of the peoples still alive that were taken to make the weapon."

Will brought up the image being brought back by the long-range sensors. "There's barely any trace elements of metreon particles in the immediate vicinity, other than those in the nebula," he said, indicating the purple glow which the computer used to label the spatial object. "Whoever is harvesting the particles must have some high-grade containment equipment; usually with the lower-end stuff, you'd be able to follow a trail of leaked particles; there's nothing so far."

"Wait;" Max pointed to one part of the screen; he had obviously been watching the radiation readouts. "It looks like there's a small spike in radition at those coordinates." Will looked at the radiometer; he was right, but only a small spike.

"It's near a planetary body." Will tapped in some commands. They were too far away, and obscured by the nebula to know many details of the planetoid, other than where it was. "It could be a high-traffic area, with lower-grade engines. Some of the more primitive versions of space drive that some non-member worlds still use for sublight produce some detectable radiation when used en-masse, but I can't be certain. What do you think, Doctor?"

Annalyn watched the screen, "it is worth checking out. These bandits are using people to arm their weapons and that is unacceptable by any standard. We need to see what we can do to effect a rescue of any still left alive, if they can be considered alive. Maybe only then can we figure out what they are, and they will be thankful enough to let us pass unharmed."

Max nodded. "Thank you for your expertise, Doctor. We'll continue with what scans we can, and have a report for the Captain by the next briefing."
