The Iapetus has entered the McAllister Nebula to begin our mapping project, but we have discovered that a Cardassian vessel is in the nebula, and appears to have been here for at least a day or two already. The Gul - who neglected to provide his name - professes to be on operations to re-secure the territories of the Cardassian Union, and has threatened to fire upon the Iapetus if we don't depart.

None of the ship's records show any claim by the Cardassians on this region since the end of the Dominion War twelve years ago, either official or otherwise. If this is a government-sanctioned operation, then it could mean that the Cardassians might be on a more aggressive turn once again. On the other hand, if it isn't a sanctioned mission, then this could mean that the Cardassians have a new break-away faction.

I've ordered a probe to be launched to act as a relay between us and the galaxy outside the nebula to try and get some clarification on this - due to the properties of the nebula, we can't send transmissions without leaving, which would give the Cardassian vessel exactly what they are asking for.

In the meantime, I have begun pouring over the Treaty of Bajor, which was the last treaty in our databanks to put defined limits on Cardassian territory. I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for, but anything that might provide a diplomatic escape from this predicament would be preferable to a firefight over a nebula.
