Vorn looked over to his Chief Science Officer as she called out. Apparently the ship's new, advanced sensor suite had been doing it's job perfectly. "What is it?" he asked, standing and moving to look at her screen over her shoulder.
Abigail looked up at Vorn, "I have found some sort of Nebula. It looks sort of like a Dark Matter Nebula." She bit her lip and hoped she was getting this right. She gently shook her head clear of any uncertainties and went on whispering, "What's a Dark Matter Nebula, Vorn?" Abigail smiled nervously at Vorn and then quickly looked back at her console hoping that her Captain may know the answer and then she kicked herself angrily, "Sorry sir. I called you Vorn twice when it should be Captain or Sir when on duty." Abigail made an apologetic face to her Captain and waited.
Vorn smiled. "Don't worry about it." he said, in reference to her using his first name. Looking at the readings, he searched his brain for the lessons from the Academy all those years ago. "A Dark Matter Nebula is, as the name would suggest, a nebula made up almost entirely of dark matter - it's normally invisible to both sensors and the eye unless it's lit up by a concentration of metreon particles." he explained. "Though by the looks of these readings, this one only gets lit up every few hours or so."
"How far away is it?" he asked. With their orders as loose as they were, the little scientist inside him was very tempted with exploring a nebula such as this - they weren't a common occurance.
Abigail looked back at her screen and contemplated, "I'd say about two and a half lightyears away at warp 2 maybe 4." She gave a little sigh of relieve as her Captain forgave her for her accidental use of his first name. She waited for a reply from Vorn.
A grin suddenly spread across Vorn's face. "Then I say we go and check it out, don't you?" Standing up straighter, and turning to shout over his shoulder, he said; "Helm! Set course for the nebula; Abigail will send you the coordinates."
Abigail sent the coordinates over to helm as her Captain broke into a big grin. With that she looked at her Captain and asked, "What should I do now sir?"
Vorn paused as he thought it over. "Send what you have on the nebula to my ready room, then take the rest of the shift off." he said eventually. It was only just over an hour before the next shift, and as well as feeling generous he wanted to quench some of the curiosity of the scientist in him from his school days.
Abigail nodded and turned back to her console. She hit some buttons and a beep signaled that the information had been sent. She stood up and stretched, "Call me if you need me Captain," Abigail told Vorn as she headed for the turbo-lift. She entered the lift and called out the deck where her quarters were.
