Captain's Log, Stardate 63011.5

I have just received a data packet in response to my preliminary report to Starfleet Command regarding our mission to Bevrud. It would appear that following the mission, the Iapetus has been reassigned.

First amongst the included documents were transfer orders for myself and my ship to leave the eighth fleet and transfer to a sub-division of the fourth fleet. This sub-division - Task Force 38 - is the primary push for what has been titled the 'Delta Exploration Initiative'. In reports which have only recently been released to me, it would appear that Starfleet found, a number of years ago, a functioning Iconian Gateway, leading to a corresponding gateway in the Delta Quadrant.

These Iconian Gateways are capable of providing almost instantaneous travel between them, regardless of the distance travelled, though they are only able to 'connect' with one other gateway. I am still reading these reports - ten years worth of data is a lot to digest. It would appear however that the 'Union Gateway', located in Federation territory in the Raeyan Sector, was once linked to a different gateway to the one it is connected to today. The events which led to the destruction of this first linkage by the Borg triggered a series of events which re-linked the Union Gateway with another, again in the Delta Quadrant. This 'Solaria Gateway' is to be our destination.

The journey to the Raeyan Sector will take roughly three months, and I have been permitted to authorise a few weeks of shoreleave for the crew along the way. As we will be passing through various sectors along the route, including Sector 001, I have decided to spilt the shoreleave time so that we have a short break for repairs at DS7 as well as some shoreleave time on Earth herself. I know I for one will relish the opportunity to return home, even if it is only for a short time before we continue onwards. I have contacted Starbase 400 in orbit of Kaleb IV to arrange for a short stop over before we cross the gap between the Romulan and Klingon Empires. I have heard reports of instability in the region, and I want the crew to be fully rested before we make that particular crossing.
