Captain's Log, Stardate 66046.5

Our deployment of the cure over Maltorra has worked, and all reports from the surface indicate that the virus has been eradicated from the populace. Prefect De'Laan tells me that they are considering an address to the population to come public with the existence of aliens and our part in helping to cure the virus, but that she will not reveal that the virus was extra-terrestrial in origin to begin with.

An alien operative appears to have been working on Maltorra all this time, and our sensors detected the he fled the planet whilst we were deploying the cure. Unfortunately we were locked into a set pattern that if disrupted would mean that the cure would not spread and we could not pursue; he or she masked their warp trail as they left and we have no leads on where they might have gone to. I wish that we could go chasing after him, but Starfleet has issued us new orders.

It seems that whilst we have been gone, the Iconian Gateways were sabotaged and then later destroyed in order to prevent misuse, and Starfleet has had to implement a new technology to connect us to the Alpha Quadrant; a repurposed Borg Transwarp Hub. At present it only links one location in each quadrant, but Starfleet have ordered that we progress through it and back to the Alpha Quadrant. The situation with Romulus has become such that Starfleet has been assigning more and more rescue and support ships to the Empire, and we are needed to plug the gaps left in the fleet back home. I have to say I am not overly thrilled at the prospect of cutting our mission of exploration short, but I understand and agree with Starfleet's reasoning.

Prefect De'Laan has requested that we not send her an envoy from the Federation for some time in order to allow her people to adjust to their new-found existence amongst the other spacefaring races of the galaxy, and I have agreed. Starfleet will be sending a diplomatic envoy to them in one standard year, though they have informed me that they will attempt to redivert a number of patrols to this region to try and find our would-be racial saboteur and to ensure that the world is protected in the meantime, but they cannot provide concrete assurances they will have the ships to maintain a proper presence this far out. It is the best we can hope for. I have agreed to allow Doctor Drani to remain on Maltorra, and she has promised to monitor the population's health, whilst Prefect De'Laan has promised to allow her to live out the quiet existence she sought.

It will take us some months to return home, and I'm going to allow the crew some extra leniency to relax on the way; the past few days have been hard on all of us, and they're move than earned it.
