Meeting The Boss

Timeline: MM2 MD27 2215hrs

John wondered down the corridor towards Archer's office. It was unusual for him to be nervous, but meeting a new department head was something that always set it off. He always hated trying to impress a new boss. It was a subconscious thing he did. He paced up and down the corridor, just down from the Chief's office. He stopped and smiled at a passing crewman. Soon as they were gone, he lost the smile and sighed. "Lets get this over and done with." He said as he walked quickly down towards Archer's Office. Sighing once more, he straightened his uniform and pressed the chime.

Sara didn't even look up from her PADD. She was still knee deep in reports on their new operational theatre, and she didn't like being behind. Still skimming the PADD, she spoke aloud to the room. "Computer, identify individual at door."

"The individual at the door is Lieutenant JG John Crichton," the computer announced in response.

Sara lowered her PADD. She was told that a new encryption expert was to be assigned to the Iapetus, but she was not thrilled about the assignment. Another officer meant that she now had a department that consisted of more than just herself, which would involve an increase in meetings and social interactions, something that Sara was not particularly looking forward too. Still, she was not going to 'break out of her shell', as her aunt put it, without forcing interactions. It wasn't like she could refuse the assignment either. "Come in," the auburn haired Lt. Commander shouted at the door. She placed her PADD in a safe location, despite Crichton's security level, and pulled up his service record on her desktop monitor.

John slowly breathed out before entering. He stopped while the door closed. Moving towards the desk, he stood at attention. Looking straight ahead towards the wall, he reported in. "Lieutenant (JG) John Crichton reporting for duty." He said in a clear, mono-tonal voice. He wasn't bothered how he sounded, he just wanted to get it over and done with.

Sara nodded. "Welcome aboard, Lieutenant. I'm sure you already know, but I'm Lt. Commander Sara Archer, chief intelligence officer of this ship. I've been reading through your file. You're encryption work is very good. Have you had much field experience, or do you usually stay ship-side?"

John pondered for a moment. “I am aware and I have had some experience. Only when files needed decrypting or perhaps a virus needed installing.” He replied. “There is nothing of recent but I am still more than capable.” John added. He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts so to decide what to say next. “I can see with our combined experience, any missions together will hopefully be efficient and interesting.” He concluded.

"I'm sure they will be." Sara reaches into a drawer and pulls out another PADD. Checking it quickly, she hands it to Crichton. "Here are your security authorizations for the Iapetus. As assistant chief intelligence officer, you will be responsible for keeping up with all the reports that come my way, with exception to those above your clearance level. That information will be provided based on a need-to-know situation."

John took the PADD and skimmed it. “Hmm” He said before replying. “That is certainly understandable Commander.” He said, still half looking at her and half reading. Moving the PADD to his side and returned his attention back to Archer. “I only learned of my new assignment five minutes before I got here, perhaps you could shed some light on our next mission.” This didn’t sounded good coming from an Intelligence Officer, but it was the truth. He had been hanging out at HQ for a couple of weeks. Then at the last minute, before the Iapetus left, they sent him over.

"We are currently en route to an Iconian Gateway that Starfleet has returned to working order. The Gateway will take us to the Delta Quadrant, where we will enter a new exploration frontier. I hope you can learn quick on your feet, Lieutenant. You have a lot of reports to get caught up on. They are listed on that PADD. Most of what we know about the Alpha and Beta Quadrants will be of little use."

Sara took a moment to let their new assignment sink in. "We have also been contacted by Captain Kaldor of the USS Marconi. You may not be aware, but the Marconi is part of the Genesis project. They have detected a number of sensor anomalies of unknown origin. The Iapetus has adjusted course to rendezvous with the Marconi."

"Interesting" John said, rubbing his chin. "I'm aware of certain aspects of the DQ. Soon as I was able to I read up the USS Voyager. I felt that if we come across any of the species they encoutered, it would help to know about them." He said looking at the PADD once more. "Is there anything else? Or can I be dismissed?" He asked. "As you say, I have a lot to catch up on." He added before she replied.

"That's all for now, Lieutenant," Sara responded, picking up her PADD. "I'll be sure to brief you after we meet with Captain Kaldor. We'll have a better idea of what's going on then. Until then, get caught up on those reports. You're dismissed."
