Shields are great

Mission:
Dark Discoveries
Location: USS Iapetus - Briefing Room
Timeline: MD4 0920hrs
Annalyn waited until everyone was gone. Then she rose, "How is the headache?"
"Better." Vorn said, as he leant back in his chair. "I can still feel them - at the back of my mind. But they don't seem to be putting as much... force behind it as they were before."
"I can help you block them out if you want. I can feel them there, but they are not using any force."
Vorn pondered that for a moment, before standing and moving to the window to look out at the nebula. "I'm not sure I want to block them out," he said. After a long pause, he continued. "This is an entirely new experience for me. And not only have I made first contact - on the Federation's perspective at least - with a new life form, but I am the one that they have made a direct link to... shutting them out seems almost as if we're trying to deny them the same moral status we give to all other species we make first contact with."
"Then do this, Envision walls around you with a double door. Air goes in and out the vents in the walls, but they are soundproof, if you feel that the beings are too much, tell them you are going to close the door for a while. You will open it later. That will let you get some rest later. You can make these walls as thin or as thick as you need them, but if this experience opened a latent talent or ability, you may need the help the walls will give you until you have time to establish formal shields later. Most humans don't control their thoughts, so you may start hearing thoughts of people all over the ship. I have lived with much thicker shields on Makhal or Earth than I have to have on the ship, but I still maintain some so I can block out everyone elses random public thoughts."
"Are you saying that they might have made me openly telepathic? I didn't realise that was possible." Vorn said.
Vorn closed his eyes as he tried to imagine the walls and door inside his mind, and it proved no easy task. Annalyn was right, humans don't control their thoughts, and trying to do so was yet another unusual task for him.
"Someday I will tell you a story about Makhal, but for how, all humans can have that ability as a latent but sometimes it takes a traumatic event to start it. If this continues, we will have to establish formal shields, but this will do until we know."
Vorn simply nodded, as he concentrated on these mental walls.
"Do I have to keep this up constantly? It takes a lot of conscious effort - I don't want to be distracted at the wrong time because I'm concentrating more on this than my work." he asked.
"That will depend on if all you hear is the beings, or you start hearing the thoughts that are running around the ship. Eventually you will not have to concentrate, if you have opened a latent ability, We will go to the garden or planet side and make it easier. If all you hear is them, you should not have to do much, and the more you do it, the easier it will become."
Vorn nodded. "OK, thank you." His tone made it clear - in a polite way - that that was the signal that he wanted to be left alone for a little while. "Please inform helm to take us away from the nebula on heading one-one-eight mark eight-two," he said, opting to stay on his own in the briefing room for a while longer.
Annalyn nodded, "Please let me know if you start hearing more than the beings." she moved to the door and exited.
"Captain wants a heading of heading one-one-eight mark eight-two, away from the Nebula." she waited to hear the acknowledgment and headed to sickbay.
