[Log Begins]

It has now been around forty five minutes since the away team landed on the surface and made contact with the warp vessel facility. The Iapetus' main computer is currently processing the results of the deep orbital scans which were carried out upon our arrival in the system.

From a personal point of view I will admit to being apprehensive about allowing the Captain to beam down on a first contact mission where there is such potential danger of hostility. The descriptions of the infection that we've had from the pilot of the warp craft have given me significant concerns about the safety of the away team. As such, I have Ensign McCluskey keeping a very close eye on topographical data and population movement. She's under orders to alert me if there is movement of anything more than ten people toward the away team's current location.

I've moved the Iapetus into a low orbit to give us the best chance of supporting the away team with that kind of information but we've had to reassign a lot of resources away from other systems to boost the sensor packets enough to give us enough precision to get the information we need. That's with our enhanced sensors.

It appears that the results of the orbital scans are in. They suggest that there are a significant number of high-impact pandemic zones where the virus is affecting as much as ninety percent of the native population. However, the indication appears to be that the area around where the away team is located has a zero percent infection rate.

The other information is sketchy but it appears that the virus is airborne and is spreading from the nucleus of the pandemic zones. I've enlisted Ensign Myers and Lieutenant Commander Drex to try and explain the reasons for the high rate of infection in certain areas.
