Mission:
Heart of an Explorer
Location: USS Iapetus - Observation Lounge
Timeline: MD42, 1100hrs
Acle walked into the conference room on the Iapetus, allowing his muscle memory to lead the way to his customary chair as he stared intently at the padd in his right hand and balancing a still steaming cup of coffee in the other. He had spent the previous hours getting permission to set up the facility on the ground and making sure that local security would be provided for it. In addition, he had to log the necessary paperwork for all the requisitions and personal allocations that would be needed for this mission. No matter what anyone else said, Acle was convinced that several suns would spontaneously go out if paperwork were ever eliminated.
Walex found his chair and absently sat in it, re-reading the last report that he had filled out. He waited for those that he had previously asked to come to the observation lounge to appear. He had sent out a general message to Lieutenant Commander Drex, Lieutenant Cohen, Lieutenant (JG) Hamson, and the newest addition to their crew, Ensign Thryskal to join him here.
Emily came in next.
"Good day Commander." She said respectively before taking the first empty seat she came across.
Ensign Thryskal was in its temporary assigned quarters when it received a notification from the computer that its presence was needed in the ship's conference room. As it was not doing anything of importance, the Insectoid arrived at the meeting area at the designated time. Two officers were currently present, neither of which it knew which was to be expected. Thryskal was just pleased to be of service to the people who had saved it from the confines of its escape pod. When it arrived, the Ensign chirped an Insectoid greeting to those in attendance and found itself a vacant seat to sit in.
Lieutenant Cohen adjusted the front of his uniform and smoothed it right before he entered the observation lounge. From there he quickly found his seat and remained quiet as he stroked the graying beard on his cheeks and placing a padd onto the desk. He had nothing to say at least for the time being.
Acle had briefly nodded to each of the officers that entered the observation lounge as they found their seats, offering a somewhat absent smile in reply to the chief science officer's greeting. The majority of his attention was still focused on the padd in front of him, as he manipulated the controls and filed away the information.
A moment more passed as the Executive Officer finished what he was doing before he finally put the padd down and looked up. His right hand curled about his now tepid coffee.
"Thank you everyone for joining me here. As you are likely aware from the various requisitions and rumors that have been flooding about the ship, we are going to be going on with the next phase of our operation to identify the disease rampaging the planet below." Acle paused briefly, taking a cautious sip of his coffee. He barely managed to avoid making a face at the taste. He hated lukewarm coffee.
"If you have not heard about the operation," Acle avoided looking at the insectoid ensign as he began to speak, but directed his voice towards it. "Then allow me to give you a summary of events. We came across a badly damaged, barely warp-capable ship on our journey, which led us to this planet, which is currently being rampaged by an unknown disease that is turning the native sentient species into what amounts to unthinking beasts." Acle paused again, taking another drink from his mug. Caffeine was caffeine he decided.
"We now need to get planet side to investigate this disease. That is why I have assembled all of you here. We need to develop a facility that can serve as our science base on the ground, whilst providing security and logistical services to any personnel in that facility. I have the basic specifications that we will need for the base and I have already gotten planetary approval. You will see those specifications have been sent to you. What we now need to do is figure out exactly what we need, and just as importantly, how to get it there. Thoughts?"
Acle finished.
Thryskal took in all of the information that the first officer was giving them. The Ensign was most curious about the actual disease more than anything else. It wondered if such a thing would affect it or if it would have to wear an environmental suit in order to work on the surface. That in itself brought about another important question. <"Are we not able to use the transporters to beam the materials to the surface?"> asked the Insectoid.
James leaned forward, "We do have access to a portable replicator, and we are able to use a power converter to link it into a shuttle. That would allow us to produce the parts we would need in order to construct it. We can also convert it into a science replicator in the interest of developing a cure."
"I agree with Lieutenant Cohen. His plan is sound." Emily stated.
Acle nodded, tapping a few notes into the padd on the table in front of him. "Excellent." The executive officer turned to the ensign at the table "We will need at least one shuttle craft for security sweeps and transport. I have been informed that some of the materials that we will need on the surface are too fragile to risk with transporters without emergency, it will disturb some of the sensor's calibrations on the more delicate instruments." Acle said.
He took another swig of his mug, emptying the remainder of the stale coffee before looking to the operations officer. "Can you get a list of the required devices that we need to put in place? Please coordinate with the medical department on that and send me the forms. If you need to requisition anything from ship stores, do it, I will sign any form that you give me."
James nodded, "Of course sir, I can have that to you in about two hours if it even takes that long."
So, it appeared as if much of the forthcoming operation was going to require a hands-on approach. It also starting making a bit of sense as to why the Ensign had been invited to this meeting. <"Am I to assume that my piloting services will be required for this mission?"> wondered Thryskal.
James nodded to the Ensign, "Yes you will be needed, I will inform you as to when we will meet you down in the shuttle bay does this sound like a feasible course of action Ensign?"
The Insectoid nodded its head. <"I serve in whatever capacity that is required of me."> Thryskal owed its life to the crew of the Iapetus and if they needed it to fly a few one of the ship's shuttles, it was perfectly qualified to do so.
"Excellent Ensign." Acle said looking towards the pilot "We'll have a schedule and flight plan for you shortly." The executive officer looked at everyone else at the table. "Unless there is anything else anyone would like to add, let's get started. This is, obviously, a time-sensitive mission." Acle said, looking around the table at the assembled officers, each in turn.
Although it didn't show it outwardly, Thryskal was pleased that it would be taking part in the mission. It never really sat well with the Insectoid when it was required to simply do nothing. The Ensign needed to stay occupied. It needed to be constructive in some way. Although its forthcoming task was a simple one, it would go a long way in proving its continuing loyalties to Starfleet and to the people who'd undoubtedly saved it from certain death.
Acle nodded once and gathered his empty mug and the padd that he had been using. He then stood up and looked towards the others seated at the table. "I will look forward to that report in the next two hours, Lieutenant. Dismissed."
