Mission:
Into a Devil's Heart
Location: Observation Lounge
Timeline: MD06 1300hrs
Vorn entered the briefing room, and was pleased to see everyone still awake, after he'd so far requested them to have a ten-hour shift, though he noted good-naturedly to himself that most of them all had a cup of coffee in their hand - and indeed, the replicator was the first place Vorn went to, before taking his place at the head of the table. He'd told all the senior staff to have their results ready for him by thirteen-hundred, and had also invited Petty Officer Williams to the briefing, as she'd been part of the away team. Ensign Bonnie Myers, the Stellar Cartographer was also present.
"Report," he said simply, as he took a sip of his drink.
Annalyn stood up, "There are over 100 still to hurt to leave the hospital, the more minor wounds have left, and I could not get a count of how many there were. It is being very hushed up. Also how many dead, no one would tell me. My PA and I did some extensive work on several of the victims, and now all will recover, but for many the burns are bad and it will be months before they well be productive again."
"We found the spot where Pendragon was standing in the holoimage. Besides that there was a significant amount of damage although I was left with the distinct impression that there was more to it. It almost seemed like most of the damage had been tacked on as something of an afterthought." Jordan reported.
Annalyn nodded, "That would fit with the injuries I saw, which were a combination of bad burns and plasma burns."
"The place we were in, it was, well, uh, " Luc said "it was literally a mess. Actually sir, with your permission, I'd like to leave a couple of repair teams behind. I'm sure it'd make life easier for those who come to fix the place up properly if the groundwork had been laid."
"Granted," Vorn said, nodding in the Engineer's direction. "Commander, Petty Officer; did you manage to find anything in the colony's databanks?"
"Sir, we have a problem, it seems that someone has covered their trail very well. We suspect a Intelligence operative or someone who has a deep intelligence background that only the Director of Intelligence and Starfleet High Command has access too. We do know that some communications were happening between two parties but we don't know who, as I said before, we know that whoever is doing all of this is a high up Intelligence operative and he's very good at covering his trail. We managed to also find a encrypted communications inside the Databanks but before we could do anything to salvage the communications a virus was released to corrupt parts of the Datacore going after key files only but leaving everything else intact." Ashley reported she knew she failed her task and she sulked their, beating herself up.
Vorn nodded, not overly surprised. He didn't doubt that John Brown would be able to forge himself a set of such access codes. It was disappointing that they weren't able to get anything more useful, but it had been worth a shot. He turned his attention to the last report. "Lieutenant? Anything on astrometric sensors?"
"We have found that the nebula has a substance called Tyvrillian-A." Abigail said.
"It's called the 'Devil's Nebula'," Bonnie said, explaining a little more about it. "It's the only noteworthy one of the three nebulae in range - the Tyvrillian-A has been recorded as being corrosive to starship hulls, and passes through all known standard shields."
Abigail handed a PADD to the CEO, "This PADD holds information of the nebula. Do you think this will be useful in developing some sort of shielding modifications?"
"I think that it's going to be tough regardless. Every little helps though, I guess." Lucas replied "But it's going to take some time, though maybe I can use this to cut it down a bit."
"Work on it along the way," Vorn ordered. He turned to address the officers at large. "I'm confident that that nebula is the one Peter was heading to - it has all the markers which match it to the description Petty Officer Williams gave in her debriefing," he paused before issuing his next order, watching them and realising how tired they each looked, and how tired he himself felt. "I want us underway at eighteen-hundred hours. That gives everyone just under five hours to get some rest. Mister Gunning, I want condition yellow when we move off. I expect Peter to have left something behind to hinder us, so I want shields up. Dismissed."
"Captain, With your access code and your permission, I would like to try to get access to the restricted files of the USS Sierra and look into Peter Browns background for any details about this shield system that was used to pass through the nebula unscathed." Ashley said looking directly at Krace.
"I've already tried," Vorn replied, slightly annoyed at having to pause and continue after he'd given the order to be dismissed. "The Sierra is classified above my clearance, as is even any mention of this shielding system." He paused only a moment before repeating his order to dismiss and heading out of the conference room, not giving another chance to have it ignored. He knew he had probably come across as a little harsh, but he was tired himself, and as much as he wanted to get underway, he knew that everyone needed some rest, including himself.
