Mission:
Borderline Diplomacy
Location: USS Iapetus Bridge - Bevrud orbit
Timeline: MD 07 2015hrs
Acle sat at the command chair, ostensibly reading over a PADD. It had been nearly three hours without contact from the surface. The local authorities had been bullied as far as Acle was willing to go without risking a major diplomatic incident. A security team was standing by, fulling suited and armed awaiting the order to go in. However, Acle was loath to give that order, as doing so would mean complete and utter break down of any diplomatic processes. To invade a possible member world's sovereignty was about the perfect definition of "diplomatic breakdown".
Acle sighed, then opened another report to give himself something to look at. This report was about possible choke points and areas of obvious strategic importance of the planet below. It would have made for at least mildly interesting reading if Acle had not already perused the report three times.
Abigail rubbed her eyes. She had been sitting at her console for a long while and her eyes were sore. She stretched a little to relax her stiff muscles and returned to her work.
Down in sickbay, Jordyn Chase was still getting herself acclimated to her new ship and surroundings. Since there were no patients pending, she went ahead and begun the long tedious task of taking inventory on the department stock.
Chris was in his quarters making last arrangements in the main room. Music played lightly in the back round as he placed a crocheted blanket across the foot of the bed.
Luc sat in his office in Engineering. He was pouring over his files and the status reports of the warp core.
James sat at the helm continuing the present course.
Jourdan likes nothing more than her ops console. She felt like she was keeping the ships blood running as she managed power levels and got the occasional call from Engineering for something.
A Klaxon rang in the bridge, immediately shocking most of the crew inside. It only sounded once, indicating an event that did not portray immediate danger to the ship.
Acle looked up from the PADD he was still pretending to read and scanned the view screen. All showed normal...
"Sensors, report." Acle's voice sounded out.
"Sir. Scanners indicate an explosion in a nebula outside the system." Abigail turned from her console, glad for the chance to rest her eyes for a moment, "Sir it could be a ship in danger or it could be a trap."
Acle frowned "Are there any readings of a distress signal?" he asked.
"Negative sir" Jourdan reported.
Acle's frown deepened, but, he settled back into his chair. He tapped his badge and spoke into it
=^=Walex to engineering... What's the status of the warp core?=^=
Luc was slightly startled when his comm. badge chirped and he heard the message but quickly put it in his stride. He looked at the report with core status on it before tapping his own comm. badge.
=^= Jameson here. Warp core currently at 81.3% of peak efficiency. What's going on up there?=^=
=^=Long-range explosion set off an alarm. Nothing appears to be amiss within the immediate area. Keep me informed Lieutenant. So far, the authorities haven't said anything about our increased power output.=^=
=^=Okay then sir. If you need me, I'll be down here. Give me a call if you need me up there.=^=
=^=Thank you Lieutenant... Just keep her in one piece for me. Walex out.=^=
Acle looked around the bridge again, noticing that everything seemed to be going back to normal, or as normal as a ship could get when they have no idea where their commanding officer is. He turned to look back towards the science station.
"Keep an eye on that nebula please, Commander." Acle said
Abigail nodded, "Yes sir," and turned back to her console to continue her watch on the readings. Things were getting rather interesting to say the least.

Space was quiet in the system. Few civilian craft plied the lanes from the planet to the outer trade stations. Stars winked and the sun burned cheerfully, spreading its rays to the system. The USS Iapetus orbited the globe below it, hull gleaming in the rays of the sun, its name emblazoned proudly on the bow of the saucer.
In the distance, just rounding the curve of the planet, a visual distortion seemed to envelope a small piece of the space outside of the atmosphere. It shimmered for a moment before materializing into the shape of a starship. The starship was odd in that it was unknown, but, its purpose was clear. It was built for war. It bore faint resemblance to Elyshan designs, but, only in certain areas. Its impulse engines became active, guiding itself towards a polar orbit of the planet.

A klaxon rang out on the bridge, shrill and insistent. It drew the attention once again of everyone on the bridge.
Abigail rolled her eyes. How many more alarms were going to sound? She looked at her scanners, but there didn't seem to be any new readings. It was probably the nebula causing her to not get any good readings. Then she called out, "Sir. I'm reading a ship. It's origin is unknown and.... I can't tell what the alloy is. Possibly something new?" Abigail turned to Acle, "Sir, should I scan the ship in further detail?"
Acle brought his head up "A ship?" Acle asked, then punched in data so that he could view it himself. "Where did this ship come from? Miss Abbott, hail it." Acle thought for a moment, then hit his comm badge.
=/=Ensign Rogan, please report to the bridge.=/=
=/=On my way sir.=/=
Abigail replied, "I don't know, it just appeared. It's in a polar orbit. Sensors can't read it very well."
Acle frowned, then said "Why did we not see it before now? Conduct full scans, try to determine how well armed or perhaps what its purpose is."
Abigail nodded and turned back to her console, her fingers flying over the buttons to create the full scan. Abigail sighed, "Sir the scan may take a few hours. Permission to continue the scan in the science labs?"
Acle nodded, then realized that Abigail wasn't looking. Feeling slightly foolish, he answered verbally "Go ahead Commander. Let me know if you find anything." Acle looked up and turned to the helm. "Helm," he called out "Please bring us to a higher orbit. Do it gradually, however, ease her into it. Just give us some stretching room if you would."
"Aye sir", James replied as his hands darted over the console, bringing the Iapetus into the higher orbit.
Abigail transferred the data to the science labs and stood up. She nodded to Acle and went to the lift and said, "Science Labs." The lift began it's descent.
"Aye sir" Jourdan said. "They're not responding" Jourdan reported. "I can boost some power to the sensors so that we can get a better look?" she suggested tapping her console.
Acle frowned slightly and took a moment to reply. "No, let Commander Valera handle that Lieutenant. Keep an eye on the ship though. If it moves, I want to know about it." Acle looked around then said formally "Mr. Riller, you have the conn." before getting up and moving to the conference room. He needed to do a little bit of thinking.
